PARABENS :

These are widely used preservatives in food, cosmetic and pharmaceutical products. Chemically, they are a series of parahydroxybenzoates or esters of parahydroxybenzoic acid. Parabens are a family of related chemicals that are commonly used as preservatives in cosmetic products. Preservatives may be used in cosmetics to prevent the growth of harmful bacteria and mold, in order to protect both the products and consumers (FDA, 2018). Most commonly in cosmetics are methyl paraben, propylparaben, butylparaben and ethylparaben.

Why are they used in today’s Industry?

Product ingredient labels typically list more than one paraben in a product, and parabens are often used in combination with other types of preservatives to better protect against a broad range of microorganisms. FDA scientists continue to review published studies on the safety of parabens. At this time, they do not have information showing that parabens as they are used in cosmetics have an effect on human health. However, scientific studies suggest otherwise. A Review of the Endocrine Activity of Parabens.

PHTHALATES:

These are salts or esters of phthalic acid. These groups of chemicals are used in hundreds of products like toys, vinyl flooring, wall covering, detergents, lubcricating oils, food packaging, pharmaceuticals, personal care and etc. Cosmetic products primarily use dibutlphthalate (DBP), which is a plasticizer in products and dimethylphthalate (DMP) in hairspray. However, DBP and DMP are rarely used and most cosmetics now primarily use diethylphthalate (DEP). The FDA suggests that that there is no clear effect on phthalates with human health with a National Toxicity Program performed from 1998 to 2000. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released a report on March 21, 2001, titled “National Report on Human Exposure to Environmental Chemicals.” The report described a survey of a small segment of the U.S. population for environmental chemicals in urine.

PUSHING FOR SAFER PRODUCTS

Market research on products and toxic chemicals in everyday products means providing better support from people like you. Creating a cleaner and healthier world with better transparency allows quality and trust from sources, coming directly from nature.

Natural products and their derivatives have historically been a source of therapeutic agents. Concerns over synthetic chemicals on health enlightens any overall hazards, toxicity, allergies or use restrictions associated with the use of ingredients. Substance assessment and persistent bioaccumulation are environmental topics that continue to be discussed under substance lists worldwide.
